Is Otoplasty Right for Me?
Although large, protruding, or misshapen ears typically do not affect your hearing or present any medical concerns, patients may consider a surgical procedure like otoplasty when the size and/or shape of the ears begin to harm their social or psychological health. In general, good candidates for otoplasty are generally:
• At least 16 years of age, or have reached the majority of ear maturation
• Bothered by ears that stick out, appear too large, or seem disproportionate
• Affected by an ear deformity or injury
• Realistic about their expectations for the final outcome

What Can I Expect During the Recovery Period After Otoplasty?
Patients who undergo otoplasty can typically return to their normal routines within 7 to 10 days. The recovery process is generally more manageable compared to other cosmetic procedures like facelifts or rhinoplasty, which often require longer downtime. Discomfort is usually mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
Our Doctor will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including guidelines on activity restrictions, incision care, and the expected healing timeline. To help reduce swelling and speed up recovery, it’s often recommended to sleep with the head slightly elevated and to wear bandages for the duration prescribed
Otoplasty Procedure
The purpose of ear surgery, or otoplasty, is to achieve a balanced and harmonious appearance by aligning the ears proportionately with the face and head. One common technique involves making a small incision behind the ear, where the cartilage is then reshaped and repositioned closer to the head. Permanent stitches may be used to maintain the new ear shape.
The procedure generally takes about two hours and can be done under general anesthesia, typically for younger patients, or under local anesthesia with a sedative for older children and adults. Otoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis.

Patients can expect to provide a detailed health history to their surgeon during the consultation. “I ask about their current complaints and also like to discuss their other medical problems, prior surgery, and family history,” clarifies our doctors.
Otoplasty will take between one and two hours to complete. The length of time will depend on the extent of correction required.
Patients generally feel well enough to return to work or school between seven and ten days after surgery. By this time, the majority of bruising and swelling will have diminished.
The surgery itself isn’t painful as you will be administered general anesthesia. You may feel some discomfort during your initial recovery since your ears will be bandaged to reduce the swelling and preserve healing.
